Recycled Coffee Grounds

Grounds for optimism

As we all know, we tend to get through and lot of coffee!! The challenge is then what to do with it, we often see cafe’s offering it as free compost but that’s not going to cut it.

One solution is to reuse and transform into a new long lasting reusable cup that lasts for years and can be fully recycled so the material is re-born and reused again and again…that seems logical!

Together, we’re brewing circular change, from the grounds up.

Step 1

Capture

The used coffee is collected from cafes by a network of waste management companies around the UK, they sort the coffee and remove any contaminants. The coffee is then dried to below 10% moisture so it can be blended with new materials.

Step 2

Sort & Process

The dried coffee is delivered to a factory in Knowsley Merseyside where it is blended under high temperatures with polymers, this allows the coffee to be malleable enough to be used in a variety of manufacturing process.

Step 3

Repurpose

The blended coffee and polymer is then processed through an extrusion machine to encapsulate the coffee inside the polymer, the extruded material is then chopped into small 3mm granules.

The used coffee material is just used on the outer thermal layer of the Circular Cup. The inside components, lid and any components that come into contact with the beverage are made using certified food grade materials to ensure the cup is safe to use.

Step 4

New Life

The used coffee material is injection moulded under high pressure and formed into the outer layer component. The outer is then spun welded to the inner layer, creating the base of the cup. The patented ‘push/push’ lid that we all know and love is then assembled onto the cup base and BOSH the cup is complete. Ready for years of use, that’s the Circular way!
