Dan’s Mission: Our CEO is rowing the Atlantic

In December, Dan Dicker, founder and CEO of  Circular&Co., will embark on a remarkable journey across the Atlantic with three friends. The project is called Lesson’s From A Boat and the challenge will see the team take on the ‘World’s Toughest Row’.

They are raising much-needed funds for Diabetes UK, Cancer Research and The Final Straw Foundation, with a fundraising goal of £200,000.

Dan and his teammates – Jason, Jon and Steve – will navigate 3,000 miles of open ocean and 40 foot seas, from San Sebastian de La Gomera in Spain to Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua.

The team’s efforts also extend beyond the race itself, as they will be collaborating with Professor Richard Thompson OBE of Plymouth University to track and analyse plastic pollution, contributing to the university’s groundbreaking work on developing software which can track large plastic items out at sea via satellite.

Meet the Crew

Jon Wilburn

Jon and Steve are both teachers and are looking forward to delivering all sorts of lessons… if technology allows! Collectively they plan to be able to deliver some inspiring and memorable lessons, on a whole range of topics focusing on the theme “Changing Tomorrow Together.”

Steven Potter

Jon and Steve plan to deliver live lessons from the heart of the Atlantic. Their lessons will reach students globally, with a focus on building resilience, inspiring youngsters to get out of their comfort zone, build an appreciation of our environment and how we can take on the challenges such as marine pollution.

Dan Dicker

Passionate about the idea of Circularity and making full use of waste materials, Dan founded Circular&Co in his garden shed some 21 years ago. By using recycled materials we hope to inspire and educate everyone about Circular Design and why we must all welcome circularity into our everyday lives.

Jason Howard

Jason is a physiotherapist and passionate about medical and mental health. Both of these will very much be tested during the crossing and many lessons learned. He will also be looking after the crews ‘ageing bodies’ and helping older athletes, who may want to tune in, learn to stay fit.

“This idea started, as many of these things do, as a chat down the pub – and now we’re rowing the Atlantic! We’re thrilled to be raising funds for causes close to our hearts. Jason’s son, Jake, has lived with diabetes since he was 10, I lost my mum to cancer 14 years ago and The Final Straw Foundation is a local charity dedicated to keeping our oceans clean.”

Dan, our founder, is not a man to shy away from a challenge. Taking on the wasteful status quo to build a sustainable, Circular Economy future is no mean feat. That’s why, when he sat us down a couple of years ago to tell us about his row, we weren’t too surprised. We caught up with him recently to get the grips with the mission and, more to the point, why on earth he’s going for it!
